Tucked in the heart of Okayama City, just steps away from Okayama Castle, The Rabbit Hole Museum is a newly opened contemporary art museum founded by the Ishikawa Foundation. Officially opening its doors in April 2025, the museum represents a new cultural landmark dedicated to artistic exploration, community engagement, and the future of contemporary art in Japan.

A Vision Shaped by Architecture and Art
The museum’s building—originally a historic structure—has been thoughtfully redesigned by acclaimed Japanese architect Jun Aoki. The renovation preserves a sense of history while transforming the space into a modern environment suitable for displaying cutting-edge contemporary art. The result is a minimalist yet imaginative architectural setting that mirrors the museum’s name: an invitation to step “down the rabbit hole” into new artistic worlds.

A Growing Contemporary Art Collection
The Ishikawa Foundation began building its art collection in 2012 and now holds over 400 works by both Japanese and international contemporary artists. The Rabbit Hole Museum serves as the primary home for this collection.
The museum’s inaugural exhibition, “Ishikawa Collection: Hyper Real Echoes,” features around 40 curated works selected for their ability to reflect, distort, and echo the world around us. Featured artists include notable names such as:
- Philippe Parreno
- Liam Gillick
- Rachel Rose
- Shimabuku
- As well as emerging and mid-career Japanese artists
Together, these works create a layered narrative that shifts between reality and imagination—perfectly aligning with the museum’s overarching theme.

Education, Community, and Cultural Revitalization
More than a museum, the Rabbit Hole aims to become a cultural hub for Okayama. A core part of its mission is the Learning Program, designed especially for children and young people. Through workshops, creative exploration, and hands-on activities, the program encourages curiosity and nurtures new ways of seeing.
By integrating art exhibitions with community-focused initiatives, the Rabbit Hole hopes to contribute to local revitalization and inspire a new generation of art lovers in the region.
